Arjun killed Jayadratha on the 14th day of the great war to avenge the death of Abhimanyu. It was Jayadratha who had closed up the gap in the chakravyuha where Abhimanyu had broken through and it was he who prevented Bhima and the other 3 Pandava brothers from following the young boy inside and helping him. As a result, Abhimanyu was caught all alone inside and although he caused a lot of damage to the Kaurava forces, he was ultimately killed after many great warriors attacked him together.

But how did Jayadratha manage to hold even the mighty Bhima away?? He was not an equal to the Pandavas in terms of strength or skill yet he could stop them on that fateful day.

It was a boon that helped Jayadratha achieve this impossible task.

When the Pandavas are in the forest during their exile, one day they all go out hunting, leaving Draupadi alone in the hermitage. Jayadratha, husband of Duryodhana’s sister, Dusshala, sees her there. He tells her that she need not spend her life in the forests leading such an uncomfortable life if she comes with him and becomes his Queen. Draupadi warns him to stay away but Jayadratha carries her off by force to his chariot and rides away.

When the Pandavas return, Draupadi’s maid, Dhatreyika, tells them what has happened. The brothers quickly follow the path taken by Jayadratha and reaching his army, they defeat it. Jayadratha is afraid that he will be killed, and leaving Draupadi behind in his hurry to escape, he rushes away on his chariot. Bhima and Arjuna follow him, asking Yudishtira along with the twins to take Draupadi back to the hermitage.

Jayadratha, two miles ahead of them, is stopped by Arjuna who fires arrows ahead of his chariot, making it impossible to go any further. The brothers catch up with Jayadratha. Arjuna prevents Bhima from killing him because he is their sister’s husband. Bhima shaves Jayadratha’s head, leaving only 5 tufts of hair and then they bring him back to Yudishtira, who, along with Draupadi, asks them to let him go.

Jayadratha escapes with his life but he is burning with shame and he decides to pray to Shiva and get a boon so that he can take his revenge by defeating the Pandavas. He goes to the banks of the Ganga and does severe penance until Shiva finally appears before him. Jayadratha asks him for his boon but Shiva tells him that it is impossible for him to battle and win against the five Pandavas. However, he gives Jayadratha the boon that he will be able to stop the four Pandavas, except Arjuna, on ONE occasion, because defeating Arjuna is impossible. This is the boon that Jayadrata uses when Abhimanyu enters the chakravyuha to stop the four Pandavas from following him in and helping him. Arjuna is busy fighting the samsaptakas at another end of the battle field and Jayadratha does not have to face him at this time.

Vana Parva- Draupadi-harana parva

And imploring the protection of the god of three eyes, the consort of Uma (Shiva), he (Jayadratha)did severe penance at that place. ......
Jayadratha, addressing that god, asked the boon, 'May I be able to defeat in battle all the five sons of Pandu on their chariots!' The god, however, told him 'This cannot be.' And Maheswara said, 'None can slay or conquer them in battle. Save Arjuna, however, thou shall be able to only check them (once) on the field of battle! The heroic Arjuna, with mighty arms, is the god incarnate styled Nara. He practised austerities of old in the Vadari forest. The God Narayana is his friend. Therefore, he is unconquerable of the very gods’.
